The latest from Carlos Garaicoa

The latest from Carlos Garaicoa
Until March 31st, Galleria Continua (San Gimignano, Italy)

Cuban artist Carlos Garaicoa will be featured until March 31st at an exhibition at Galleria Continua (San Gimignano, Italy) entitled Sin solución [“Without a solution”]. Concepts like utopia and ideology--and more specifically, the demise of last century’s great narratives--articulate the exhibition. Garaicoa takes Havana, its architecture, and derelict spaces as a starting point for his reflection on the city’s political and social history, which is itself a metaphor of the 20th century.

Carlos Garaicoa simultaneously curates at the same gallery a collective exhibition, El camino más largo comienza con una simple línea [“The longest path begins with a simple line”]. Among the exhibitors we find Lázaro Saavedra, a politically engaged artist that has been a reference for Garaicoa as well as other artists of his generation.

"One million dollars" by Wilfredo Prieto makes waves at ARCO Madrid

« One million dollars » by Wilfredo Prieto was one of the most talked-about pieces displayed at ARCO Madrid, which took place last week. It consists of a one-dollar bill fit between two mirrors in such a way that the dollar image is indefinitely reproduced. The piece’s selling price is indicated by its name, and Prieto requires that potential buyers sign a contract that forbids them from selling it for any sum other than $1 million. The work is insured for its nominal value and a guard surveys it at all times. With this very original piece, Prieto sought to discuss the relationship between art and the speculative market.

Starting on January 27th
