Abel Barroso solo exhibition at LA’s Couturier Gallery

The work of Cuban artist Abel Barroso is featured in “There’s no place like home”, a solo exhibition at Couturier Gallery (Los Angeles) from October 27th until December 1st. Like much of Abel’s previous work (“Pinball del emigrante”, “Visa Monopoly"...), the pieces selected for the show dwell on themes like social borders, immigration, and poverty from a satirical perspective.

Phot’Aix 2012 features five Cuban photographers

The 2012 edition of the Phot’Aix 2012, an annual photography exhibition that takes place at Aix-en-Provence, features five Cuban photographers—René Peña, Aimée García, Jorge Otero, Adrian Fernández and Adonis Flores— whose work served as inspiration to the projects of five local artists. The final result is the pairing of photographs by Cuban and French photographers around a common caption written by each duo.  The show is on until November 18th at the Musée des Tapisseries (Aix-en-Provence, France).

23rd International Ballet Festival of Havana

23rd International Ballet Festival of Havana

Between October 28th and November 7th will take place the 23rd edition of the International Ballet Festival of Havana. The program includes performances by the National Ballet of Cuba as well as by guest companies and dancers. Simultaneously, a series of conferences, book presentations, ballet technique courses and photo exhibitions will be organized throughout the city.

Cuban artist Roberto Diago featured at New York’s MagnanMetz Projects art gallery

Roberto Diago’s first solo exhibition in the United States is taking place at MagnanMetz Projects Gallery— one of New York’s hottest spots to view Latin American art— until October 13th. Although consistent with Diago’s usual Afro-Cuban and social themes and his richly textured, colorful style, the pieces on display depart from Diago’s usual figurative references and shift closer to abstraction.

Havana Cultura presents ‘Mala in Cuba’

When Mala— a British-Jamaican electronic artist better known as ‘Digital Mystikz’— accompanied his friend and fellow DJ Gilles Peterson to the recording of his latest Havana Cultura album, he wasn’t sure what to expect. The experience, however, allowed Mala to meet some of the Cuban capitals most promising artists—from vocalist Danay Suárez to jazz pianist Roberto Fonseca—with whom he recorded traditional Cuban rhythms. Mala returned home with a laptop full of inspiration, which he then sewed together in his own particular way. The result of this experiment is the album Mala in Cuba, which marries the sound system culture of London with the rhythmic leanings of Cuban jazz.

 An acclaimed architectural documentary on Havana’s ISA will be aired on PBS

After various screenings and accolades at film festivals around the world, the documentary Unfinished Spaces will air on the American public station PBS on October 12th.  The film, directed by Alysa Nahmias and Benjamin Murray, retraces the architectural history of the Instituto Superior de Arte [Higher Institute of Art], commissioned in 1961 and built on the former grounds of a Havana golf club.

Cuban singer and composer Yusa is currently promoting her new album, Libro de cabecera en tardes de café. The album— Yusa’s fifth—was recorded earlier this year in Havana and Buenos Aires. It features songs by songwriters that Yusa considers essential to her musical identity. Upcoming concerts include:

A panorama of contemporary Cuban art at the Bronx Museum of the Arts

Until October 7th, the Bronx Museum of the Arts offers the American public a rare opportunity to get an overview of contemporary Cuban art. The exhibition features works by artists such as Carlos Garaicoa, Los Carpinteros, Sandra Ramos, Manuel Mendive, and Reynier Leyva Novo from both museum’s permanent collection and loans from private collectors.
