The heartbeat of the Havana Cultura project, Gilles Peterson and Roberto Fonseca brought together a handful of Cuba’s finest musicians to bring their vision to life: Ramses Rodriguez on drums; bassist Omar Gonzalez; Javier Zalba on flute and saxophone; the prodigious Yelfris Valdes on trumpet; and the legendary percussionist Yaroldy Abreu. Flourishing under the direction of Fonseca, Peterson and Vince Vella, they captured the essence of the Havana Cultura groove. Here’s what Gilles had to say about the tracks...

The first time Gilles Peterson came to Cuba he “was only there for a few days, not even the weekend,” he recalls in the CD booklet. But that was enough time for him to hear just about all the tracks he wound up selecting for this amazing survey of new Cuban sounds, some of them never before released. “With rum, fried chicken and Cuban cigars featuring heavily in my daily routine, there was just enough time to meet Cuban dons like Roberto Carcassés and Roberto Fonseca before returning to London.”
